Coalition for Gender Equality

The Coalition for Gender Equality was established in 2014, at the initiative of five non-governmental organizations in the field of women's rights (CPE - Equality Partnership Center, Front Association, AnA Feminist Analysis Society, A.L.E.G Association and E-Romnja Association) who had previously collaborated since 2009-2010 in organizing feminist actions in the public sphere on gender equality and violence against women.

The Coalition was created within the project "Coalition for Gender Equality", funded through the EEA Grants 2009-2014. Subsequently, other non-governmental organizations joined the Coalition, the total number of members currently being 12.

The mission of the Coalition for Gender Equality is to create favorable conditions for the development and strengthening of the capacity of non-governmental organizations active in the field of gender equality to promote and integrate the principle of equal opportunities between women and men in all areas of public and private life.

Strategic Directions of the Coalition:
- Raising awareness and advocacy for the introduction of gender equality notions in the school curriculum, as a long-term action capable of preventing misogynistic manifestations in Romanian society;

- Raising awareness and advocacy for the introduction of sex education in schools, through which young people can acquire basic notions about the functioning of their bodies, relationships based on respect and consent, recognition of sexual abuse, etc.

- Watchdog for the observance of women's rights in Romania, including rapid reactions to discriminatory statements and actions against women;

- Promoting partnership between women and men in the private sector, in domestic work and in care work;

- Counteracting conservative initiatives aimed at restricting women's rights, in particular the right to abortion;

- Promoting the representation of women in leadership positions in public institutions and in the political life;

In carrying out these strategic directions, the Coalition organized advocacy activities, such as round tables, public debates, meetings with representatives of the public administration and Parliament, sent open letters, sent petitions to CNCD, organized flash mobs and protests.

At the same time, the Coalition produced reports and proposals for public policies submitted to the Government, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the City Hall and other stakeholders, gaining extensive experience and know-how.
