10 years of feminist street activism. Photo-video exhibition (May 05-19)
May 5, 2022
Front Association, together with the non-governmental organizations within the Coalition for Gender Equality, invites you on Thursday, May 5, 2022, from 6.30 pm, to the opening of the photo-video exhibition "10 years of feminist street activism" which will take place at ARTHUB Gallery in Bucharest, str. General Constantin Budișteanu no. 10. From protests and marches, to performances and flash mobs, the photo-video exhibition recalls civic actions in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, Iasi, Brasov, Timisoara, Giurgiu, Valea Seaca, Alba-Iulia and Targoviste .
For the past 10 years, women in Romania have claimed public space to draw attention to the issues they face: domestic violence, sexual violence, restricting the right to abortion, lack of sex education in schools, banning gender references in schools, discrimination against girls and Roma women. The feminists also organized demonstrations in solidarity with women from Spain, Poland, Turkey, Bulgaria.
The images of the exhibition are accompanied by the original texts of the manifestos from each action. You will be able to read calls for solidarity, chanting, taking positions, emotional testimonies, demands towards the authorities and society at large. Slogans heard in the street - "Believe us", "You are not alone!", "Solidarity, let's all unite!", "If one falls, we all fall", "March 8 means fighting!", " My body, my choice” are recalled in the exhibition, through images and texts.
The exhibition captures only a part of the feminist civic actions of the last 10 years, those carried out in the street, as public gatherings. Many other interventions took place in communities, schools, workplaces or in meetings, debates and roundtables with authorities and other stakeholders, or took the form of public policy statements, petitions and proposals. Street activism is the pinnacle of civic mobilizations for women's rights and gender equality in recent years, the visible part of many other efforts to bring women’s issues to the public agenda, some of them remaining taboo until recently. Street actions are backed by feminist art and culture manifestations, more and more numerous, sometimes located in the avant-garde of feminist demands, in literature, theater, film, music, contemporary art, etc., along with intense activity in academia.
The collection of images and texts included in the exhibition was based on our own archives - the organizing team being part of many of the public events captured by the exhibition, but also through the contributions of other participants.
The exhibition can be visited between 5 and 19 May 2022, from Wednesday to Sunday, between 16:00 and 20:00. Guided tours will be announced on www.ongen.ro.
