Reading Journal VI: Hipster, Synecdoche

January 7, 2022

Hello! I read the essay „Hipster, sinecdocă. Erou al clasei de mijloc sau țap ispășitor” or “Hipster, Synecdoche. Middle Class Hero or Scapegoat”, by Ciprian State, published in 2019, in the book “Hisperi, bobos și clasele creative”, or “Hipster, Bobos and Creative Classes”.

The history of Romanian hipsterism can be looked at as the history of the idea of ‘cool’, like the author says. State explains how under capitalism, with the very fast paced social and cultural changes, you have to be in tune with what’s happening now in order to survive in a system of market competition. If you pay attention and understand quickly the changes which are coming or an emerging trend, you’re the first one to profit or gain social capital.

This essay really blew my mind and got me to reflect heavily on my life for the past 18 years, from when I was 15 until now. The analysis of hipsters is a tough and necessary examination for every reader in my generation.

One of the topics of this essay, which we are exploring within our new project, EGALIS, consisting, among other, of 15 videos about feminism, is the development of the idea of hipsters in Romania and how women fit in this new world.

xoxo
